What has been the impact of the internet on media production?

During 1995 The Guardian newspaper did not own a website at the time, but the slowly started to consider promoting the paper online. The capabilities then weren’t as wide, because the internet was a new to technology, and not as nearly as established as today.  I will illustrate the evolvement of The Guardian and how the paper were impacted to graudate into new media.
The Guardian is a British national daily newspaper founded in 1821 by editor and publisher John Edward Taylor. The newspaper started largely from a large media institution to slowly embark a mass audience. A theory that that best describes the evolution of web linking webpages with hyperlinks was Web 1.0 (designed by Tim Berners-Lee). 
In September 1995 the Guardian's New Media Lab was officially established by the Board of Guardian Newspapers Ltd with instructions 'to implement an electronic publication of the Guardian and Observer'.
The Guardian webpage existed in an era where the platform of information was read only. It consists of static and non-interactive web pages that at most allow for an interchange of documents. In 1996 for were 45 million global users. The focus of Web 1.0 was on companies and owning content.

Entertainment 3.0

What is Joost ?

Joost is an online distribution of TV shows and video content, set top box for 2009, that uses peer-to-peer TV technology to distribute content to their Mozilla-based desktop player, in late 2008 this was migrated to use a Flash-based Web player instead.

Joost began development in 2006. Working under the code name "The Venice Project", Zennström and Friis assembled teams of some 150 software developers in about six cities around the world, including New York, London, Leiden and Toulouse. According to Zennström at a 25 July 2007 press conference about Skype held in Tallinn, Estonia, Joost had signed up more than a million beta testers, and its launch was scheduled for the end of 2007.
Joost also produces news updates, discussion forums, show ratings, and multi-user chat sessions (often linked to the active stream/channel) are made possible through the use of semi-transparent widget overlays.

What Social Networks will be apart of Web 3.0?

Wink is a people search engine for blogs and social networks. The capabilities demonstrated by the company are in an area, social search that is receiving attention as a potentially important development in web search.
Twitter will be the major player in Web 3.0 in social networking. Twitter has become an essential tool for building relationships and finding conversations my business and I want to be part of. I have built teams in Hoot suite and made real connections through Twitter and my network is active and supporting.

Who is at the Forefront?

Radar network developed a social web called Twine, launched in 2007. Twine is used to store information, authoring and discovery over the web. Twine is an example of a semantic web (web 3.o), when you everything tagged use Resource Description Framework (RDF) and Web Ontology Language (OWL) so that pages and content will be meaningful. The newly added meaning will make it possible for other computers to use the content intelligently. This will provide more-useful and context-aware search results, for example. Twine extends this to all of your information, email, sites visited, feeds and will automatically generate the tags to "semantify" the data.
Twine is the next generation of social bookmarking. It tries to understand you by providing the most appropriate content for you. The machine can make specific suggestions of webpages, according to the user’s previous searches, without the page creator specifying the information, as is Twine's proposed goal. This will ultimately change the way we socialise and use the web we may be placed back in the mind frame of a consumer, instead of a producer.

What is Web 3.0?

I agree with the stament made by Sonja Hyde moyer, Smh Project
the fact is i think when there is one version or evelment of the web it it automatically considered an upgrade on the previous abilites of the web. In the end we can decide or create of fraction of the web where it . I think that the web is constantly evovling we may get carried away with defining ecactly what era it is as advanced in the web the most users and producers are we will long be conuting and forgetting the indivdual characteristics of each web.

Shirky’s theory of media development and audience transformation

Clay Shirky looks at how the media landscape is evolving in the newer technologies today and its uses and users contribute to it ever expanding effect in the online age. So I watched a very insightful speech on the theory of media development and audience transformation that I make reference to build up my analysis and personal thoughts. Connection are made to the election including president Obama’s scheme to connect with citizen in untamed discussion amongst intrigued people on their thoughts of the election. In addition to the internet censorship in the Chinese government review its strategies to our renewed and advanced world of media users/consumers/producers make it difficult for the government to filter the citizen reports on the recent earthquakes in china.
According to Shirky the importance of technology and media products is very important, the internet is the first bit of media that you can have conversations and consume; every medium is next door to every other medium (on the internet). The importance of the internet is that media operators which are everyday people can now be consumers as well as producers for example this can be portrayed through social networking media you can post videos and watch videos however you have the comfort of talking and communicating to friends.
The first topic focus made in the video above is the impact in audiences and transformation of audiences. The way audiences respond to news we are nowadays given a voice through commenting boxes, to social network interaction, debate and online blogging and ammeter videos discussing or updates on new information around their world can exchanged beyond our own family and friends. But we can now not only transform from a consumer into our own media producers. We are becoming more confident and at ease of technology allows to not only inform but to connect in a massive, we are no longer limited in the revelation of online spills on world topics can branch in many different countries that bridges a connection in a massive way. We can talk and discuss with all kinds of people in around the world, the internet has grown in a big way based on the interaction and connection the internet brings in our current landscape.
Clay Shirky's work focuses on the rising usefulness of decentralized technologies such as peer-to-peer, wireless networks, social software and open-source development. New technologies are enabling new kinds of cooperative structures to flourish as a way of getting things done in business, science, the arts and elsewhere, as an alternative to centralized and institutional structures, which he sees as self-limiting. In his writings and speeches he has argued that "a group is its own worst enemy." His clients have included Nokia, the Library of Congress and the BBC.
The impact on audiences and transformation of audience is becoming clearer as time goes on and more technology starts to develop that audience is playing a major part in society, the main thing that has changed is that anyone now can be a citizen reporter the government can access news now from normal citizens not the national news broadcasters. The reasons we have this advantage now is because of social media sites where people can be connected all the time and news has the advantage of being spread rapidly. For example the Chinese government found out about the earthquake in their own country via twitter rather than having it reported by news officials, this can be beneficial because pictures and videos can be uploaded and everyone can see the reality into what really happened. This caused people to set up donation sites any money was raised straight away. This fits in with Michael Wesch’s 2.0 theory where he stated the changes in the way we communicate however when there is a new story there is an overload in the information that gets posted which causes no way of filtering the stories being posted, this could lead to big social media sites such as twitter being shut down due to the overload of information being processed.
Clay Shirky  stated  in his speech that there are four periods in the history of media when there was a major change the first being print, then two way communications which was first introduced as text then followed by voice and the third was recorded media which was firstly photos, then sound and music. Lastly the fourth was radio and TV.
Yet, another interesting theory on the crescendo that is the media landscape, taking its part in an online age. So do please leave a comment any thoughts shared in this post.

How do people in the UK use online sources to search for holidays?

Have you ever considered how YOU use online sources to search for holidays?
I know that the online media makes it easy for me to contact my cousins and uncles in America, how else online media has helps us to also factor online booking for vacations abroad in today media landscape. Looking at information related to the both the ease and speed of online booking with travel agents has presented a huge impact on me and those in the UK today.  In a surprising static of women being more likely to book holidays online than men, more research goes into the efficiency of technology in the more popular and successful brands and holidays amounting to less time organising online. The recession may feel it has been forever, but it was before 2009 that the recession hit hard for those around the UK, the main destinations for people travelling on holiday was New York, Paris, Amsterdam, London and Rome after the recession hit the rates of people going on short holidays fell to 13% of the population. So when the recession came about more people started cutting back on the short holidays for the long holidays instead. By the end of this post I will look at how holidays in UK have been affected from the growth of online sources.
The first step to establishing your target audiences is to understand the types of people who use travel. Again, looking back at the amount of women do more online booking than men, shows women that are mothers or considered the homemakers are regularly searching for summer getaways and deals in online travel websites for their kids. The fact is they are off school. We learn that more travel websites do not only recognise relationship between  genders, but in addition to age groups surrounding the women are between 35-49, show that they are the main audience booking the holidays.
The possibilities are that short holidays are of more of a bargain than long term trips, that is the reason behind the continual booking of short holiday trips. However, people between 25- 34 are frequently visiting travel websites, the reasons could be  the advantage of growing up with the knowledgeable use of technology in the 21st century differ for those in their 50’s, that are less advanced. Find it more difficult and more comfortable consulting with a travel agent directly, an interesting statement made in another blog (http://amasmediablog.blogspot.com/) by a friend is that “they may have asked their grandchildren to do the research for them as many pensioners are not as familiar with the new age technology.”, which I agree with totally.
In a statistic of women’s favourite destination shows that is Paris, Dublin and Barcelona. In comparison, to men more favourable destinations are Dubai and Amsterdam. I have learnt people between the ages of 25-34 and 35-49, were the main groups looking at online bookings for holidays abroad. Those under the age of 24 are more likely to vacate with family members, such as, their parents or they may not as financially stable as those over 50 years old, and who are less up-to-date on modern technology. The concluding point is those between 25-34 and 35-49 the main target audience for short time breaks.
I found out that cheapflights.co.uk is the most visited online site for online booking, and not too far behind is laterooms.co.uk. The media continues to expand it the level of access through mobile phone in wireless connection to booking online on the go! Examples such as Facebook and Twitter are enable customers to become friends or follow travel agents, to be informed of the latest holiday deals on prices.  
Travel websites adopting their own social networks helps to make connections with their target audience, the more it will further expand their cliental. Whereas, Facebook allow online users to ‘like’ pages of their website. This is great for evolving their brand name and service. Providing more insight into types of holiday booking are more appeal on their websites, it made far more easier narrowing down on such information provided by the public. Cheapflights.co.uk are encouraging people to join their Facebook website and in return they will receive £50 off with their next booking this is not only because they want to get more ‘likes’ on their website but when people like pages it comes up on the ‘news feed’ which means all the contacts friends list will be able to see that they like the page, attracts other to follow in the same manner of clicking ‘like’ on their page

From MTV to YouTube: Studying Music Video


Rich Mix is media centre based in bethnal green, and there they are hosting 'From MTV to Youtube: Studying Music Video'. On Tueesday 29 November from 10.30am-3.30pm
I will be attending this affair in connection with my own music video. in the hopes of shedding light onto more areas or charaecteristic in music video that I can learne and better advance my knowledge to develop the best music video.

"Music video is a powerful and enticing media form with which to engage students in the key concepts in Media Studies. This event will take a close look at the vibrant and exciting world of music videos as a means of developing both students' analytical and practical production skills.

The morning clip-based presentation will be followed by an industry-focused afternoon, including the chance to meet Liz Kessler, Head of Music Video at Academy Films, and a director who will talk to students about the process of making a music video.
Led by Pete Fraser, a senior assessor for A Level Media Studies"

This will make for great field research, the fact I am seeking professional views and guidence. This will definatley make for an interesting event and future update on my blog. So stay tuned for more on the event!

Web 2.0

All the things you need to know about Web 2.0, this is especially for you!

Who is Michael Wesch? Michael Wesch is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State Univesity. Michael Wesch has been exploring the effects of new media on society and culture. After two years studying the implications of writing on a remote indigenous culture in the rain forest of Papua New Guinea, he has turned his attention to the effects of social media and digital technology on global society.

What is he famous for? Michael Wesch created a short video, " Web 2.0...The Machine is Us/ing Us". Released on Youtube on January 31 2007, it quickly became the most popular video in the blogosphere and was viewed over 10 million times. To be exzact 11,491,361.

He was one of the pioneers of Web 2.0, exploring the effects of new mdeia on society and culture. he evetually turned to the effects of social media and digital technology on global society. His videos on culture, technology, education, and information has not only been viewed by millions, but tranlated in over 15 languages!

Pre-production: Clothes and Colour Palettes

5. h. What kind of clothes does each character wear and what do the clothes tell us?
 
i. What colour palette and progression would promote the video’s thematic development?
The music video is a narrative piece that we have spoken together as a team to keep it naturally lit, similar to videos like Florence and the Machine ' What the water gave me', it a wonderful example of using natural lighting that would best resonant and familiar for viewers and visualise them selves in her video. This is the same essence we wish to capture in our video, that you could visualise yourself in a classroom with someone you never took notice of, or never expected the unexpected lengths he would go to have her.

To reinterate on the embodying natural lighting inspired by Florence and the Machine video, I compared this video in a previous post to Marcus Foster's 'I Was Broken'. In that video is strictly black and white, this evokes a muted feeling, an expression of loss of life and evidently colour.  I thought it would be a good idea to combine both contrasting colour schemes of each video into ours. For example, the greatly uncomfortable moment when he plans her capture and takes her through the woods or when he is filmed alone, we would change the colour scheme into black white when editing the footage on Final Cut Pro. 
I think this will make for interesting dynamic between the use of natural and editing key moments in black white, the alteration will hopefully bring attention to tense moments and significance to viewers.
The Rose by Salvador Dali
Below are two music videos, one is Nirvana 'heart shaped box and the other by Ed Sheeran 'A-team'. Nirvana's music video is a conceptual piece, which has a powerful colour scheme that includes red predominately considering the tile of the song hold the word 'heart', indicates an important connection with the lyrics and its theme. In addition to being a brightly lit video the scenarios that we see in the videos are peculiar and most disturbing. Besides the ambiguity of the videos the colour scheme is very reminiscent of surrealist artist Salvador Dali. This is seen in the scenes in the landscapes of a blue sky orange and red flowers and hay.
The unconventional British artist Ed Sheeran and his music video 'A-team' is a narrative video, which from beginning to end edited in black and white. In this instance used to depict misfortunes of poverty, loneliness, misunderstanding and vulnerability of this one women travelling through London. The thing about Ed Sheeran music video doesn't feature him much in this video not at all, but I chose this video because the use of black and white to indicate a deeper more sensitive situation to unveil an emotive attachment.

Pre-production: Video Themes

5) a. What is the video’s theme? The theme for my music video is of a young guy who is so love-struck with a girl that the boundary between reality and the dream-state he has when imagining what he wants his relationship with the girl to be like, is blurred. It shows how far people would go for love and how it makes you do crazy things. However, we make this an extreme example as the male kidnaps his love and that's when things become even crazier.
b. What are its mood progressions?  The video starts with the end and shows the viewer how he got there. It starts off very hostile with the girl tied to a tree and the lead character waving his gun around in despair. Then it flashes to him scouting her and he is smitten with love which is reflected in the lighting and then progresses to him imagining them walking through the park hand-in-hand though collapses down to reality with black and white/dark images to illuminate the reality of his dark actions.
c. What kind of location should each sequence have? From the beginning of research and planning we wanted to film in the woods or a park. We akso plan on featuring the sky when the chrous 'blue skies are calling' to connect the audio and visuals in our video. We also will be filming in a shopping mall showing him watching her from a distance so wherever she was, he was never far away. Even in broad daylight he will always be there watching and waiting for her to finally be his.
d. What statement should each location make towards the video’s premise? We will have some books in the car that he kidnaps the girl in; one being Enduring Love which gave us the idea of the music video's premise as there is a character that can't help but love a man he's never met. He cannot help his actions as he is driven by love and it also ends with violence.
e. How should each set be lit? The lighting for our music will be naturl sunlight, in my reserch of inidemusic videos they use natural lighting such as 'What the water Gave Me' by Florence and the Machine use natural sunlight in the outdoor. We regonised this to be a convention of indie musi videos to be simple yet realistic.

Pre-production: Locations

4) I will touch down on our locations organised between our Location Manager Mark, and the performance captured within them.
Park – In the park we have a lead male and female looking happy and in-love in the park. They will share a picnic together and this will symbolise the inner thoughts of the guy kidnapping his female crush.
While in a second scene is where he drags from her car into the park, where no one can hear her and have moment alone. The girl will be tied up and distressed from the distorted motives to relish her of human cruelty and brutality.  
       
         

Home environment- in this space will be only using an empty living room space with a bed and the floor and not much any other furniture. This is where he takes the girl after kidnapping her on her way home, into this dull and derelict living room.
Townscapes- This is what will video while his driving his car, the camera will positioned looking out of the window, through the town he has captured her too, while passing couples, and families oblivious to the villain that passes through their streets, as he is holding ‘soul mate’ in the back of the boot.
Bedroom- The bedroom will belong Phil who is unhealthy love-struck by a girl in his sixth form. In this bedroom will compile an array of photographs taken in secret of her consuming a bedroom wall. This is one of the more uncomfortable and creepy scenes, as the audience will understand the extent of his desire to possess her, which he has built a shrine for in his home.
Classroom- This is where the obsession and the desire to own the so-called love of his life into kidnap for his own desires. So it is the classroom where there share lessons and stares at her from a distance. Considering he doesn’t notice him at all, he is almost nonexistent to him, more or less invincible. Therefore what waits for her she would have never seen it coming, although, his textbooks and his bedroom compiles pictures and hearts with each other’s name in the middle.  
Motorway- This is when he finally stops driving and we see him drag her out the boot into the park for the final scenes.
Starbucks- he stalks her and her friends on the girls day out and watches her and her daily routine.
I do consider the theme and drama behind our idea can be overwhelming from an outside perspective, and if someone were to watch our female lead dragged from a car boot. This could lead to panic and obvious worry and dangers of our actions. Therefore, we must consider the time of day that we film, that no one is concerned with the role play behind our scenes. Perhaps, if we were to titled our clothing like a true production crew. For example, 'Filming' or 'Film project' on the back of clothing. Someone watching us film scenes like that in the general public, will understand their is no harm and that is purely performance and no real hurt between our actors.

An additional point would be the people that are extras, we must ensure the extras casted in our classroom are willing participants, so that no one is made uncomfortable, forced, or unknowingly involved in filming are notified of our motives for the music video.

How has Web 2.0 evolved from Web 1.0?

I have included a simple table on the  evolution of the web from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 where we are now. It was an interesting day in media as we dig deep into the meaning behind Web 2.0 and how its the next generation of the Internet. how is has become easy for us not only to inform, for what myself and millions of people having the power to construct our use of the web to interact and most importantly connect with the world.

I think it is the most popular and fascinating thing the web and how it plays a massive part in our usage we spend hours on end. For example  blogging, looking at Facebook profiles, listening and downloading music and how can i forget the huge popularity of apps. What they all have in common is the fact it is free.

This brings me to the focus of our media lesson today, as we introduced to Assistant Professor of Anthropology Micheal Wesch. Well Mr Wesch is famous for releasing a video on YouTube on January 31 2007, which quickly became the most popular video in the blogshere. Intrestingly topped American Superball promos and commercial, that cost over 3 million dollars to produce. Against a Micheal Wesch's costless video designed on a home desktop out does big time production companies. 

I think I am not alone when I say on the power of users is uncomprehensible, and it will continue more update it self, and refreshing for further user connection in around the world!

Will YouTube replace TV?


The web video site ventures into original programming by partnering with celebrities like Madonna and Deepak Chopra to launch 100 new channels.

YouTube may be the top destination for videos of cats playing the piano, but could it be a threat to television? Google is betting it is. The company announced that YouTube, which Google owns, is partnering with Madonna, Ashton Kutcher, Amy Poehler, The Onion, Slate, and others to launch 100 new online "channels" with exclusive original programming — a deal reportedly worth $100 million. The first channel is expected to launch this month. Google is also updating Google TV to offer an easier way to access the new YouTube channels. Is this the first step toward making YouTube a replacement for cable TV?

I am personally not up for it, however, in many ways Youtube is embarking on what has already been obvious for a while now. Are viewers ready to cuddle up and watch ... YouTube? Although, it is a common fact most people are on the internet more than they are watching TV. An example of TV supplements used in an online sense is illegal downloading of films, which eliminates the expenditure on costly cinema tickets. I recently went shopping in Westfield huge mall in Shepherds Bush, and a single ticket was over £11...LuDaCris! In addition to free online websites for TV dramas and soap operas are made accessible to millions, including those are my own friends. Could this be a new and intriging gage at making online TV entertainment legal?
Google may be on to something: "The traditional TV industry should consider itself warned," says Matt Rosoff at Business Insider. As more and more programming migrates online, TV is "changing from a world of a few hundred channels to millions of 'channels' available via the web." Google is smart to capitalize on that movement, and the Google TV link will put the YouTube programming on "equal footing" with cable shows.
"Make no mistake: Google is taking on the TV industry"

All it needs is one success: YouTube's problem has been that "skateboarding-chicken videos aren't necessarily what most people look for when they settle in on the couch" for the evening, says Michael Hogan at Moviefone. But "a skateboarding channel programmed by Tony Hawk" might be. Even if 90 percent of these channels fail, Google's investment will pay off if one or two can build a loyal audience, bypassing "the gatekeepers of broadcast and cable television."
"What do YouTube's new celebrity channels mean for movies and TV?"

There is no way this will work: It's hard to imagine YouTube becoming "a viable alternative for television," says Mack Rawden at Cinema Blend. It just doesn't have enough substance, and it still won't even with these new channels. "Every year, hundreds of schemes and inventions are touted as waves of the future." Like most of them, this experiment will probably be "written off as costly and foolish" within the year.
"Will YouTube ever rival television?" (how will all the rich people take down those plasma screen tv's from all around their homes from every room!? This could be tragic =[. )

World Exclusive"YouTube to launch 100 online channels"

Partners in challenge to traditional TV industry include Wall Street Journal, Madonna, Ashton Kutcher and Shaquille O'Neal!

TV production companies and film studios getting involved include Lionsgate, the US company behind Mad Men and Nurse Jackie, which is creating a fitness channel, and X Factor co-producer FremantleMedia, which is to launch a pets and animals channel.

The television channels will roll out on YouTube starting this autumn: Celebrities are to offer own-branded channels - Madonna (pictured) will have a dance-themed channel. Among the dozens of channels debuting are:

>> Car and Driver Television
>>"Life and Times," from the rap star Jay-Z
>> A pop culture channel from producer Ben Silverman

The new channels provide the long-missing monetization piece for YouTube, providing content against which the Google-owned site can sell advertising.

In an effort to reach consumers in a multi-platform environment, Hearst Magazines has announced that the company will develop two new online video channels through YouTube. Hearst is one of among several publishers including Meredith and Rodale to roll out a plan to take advantage of the new space, which was made public on Friday.
"Today we're announcing that even more talented creators and original entertainment will soon join YouTube's existing channel lineup, including channels created by well-known personalities and content producers from the TV, film, music, news and sports fields, as well as some of the most innovative up-and-coming media companies in the world and some of YouTube's own existing partners," a blog post from YouTube says.

The company's goal with this channel expansion is to generate more diverse ranges of Internet entertainment with YouTube--according to news reports, there could be more than 100 total YouTube channels that are expected to generate at least 25 hours of new programming a day. This YouTube expansion, which is part of the GoogleTV initiative, brings incentives for content creators: prospective revenue dividends will likely be very valuable since Google is planning to share as much as 55 percent of the revenue generated from advertisers.

Hearst branded programming will first be available on the automotive channel with content from Car and Driver, Road & Track and Popular Mechanics. On the fashion and beauty channel, Hearst plans to bring content from Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire, Seventeen and RealBeauty.com.

These new video packages and channels from YouTube will start rolling out this November; Hearst will begin pushing its new content in 2012. According to YouTube, video content will be accessible on any device that can gain Internet connectivity and all the social features of YouTube, like the ability to share on Facebook or Twitter, will be integrated with the new service.


According to reports, YouTube is paying $100m to producers as an advance on the advertising revenue that the videos will bring in. Advances are thought to be as much as $5m per channel and content creators are thought to be in line for more than half of all revenues made.

On Friday, Google also announced a new version of Google TV, adding search tools that expand results to include shows on cable or web-based services like Netflix and Amazon

Pre-production: Inspirations

3) I was inspired by the simplicity of the music video by Marcus foster called I was Broken featuring Kirsten Stewart as the female lead. I thought the editing of the music only featured the artist and the actress and moment of moving imagery of nature and townscapes. I felt that the lonely and empty spaces captured the moment similar between the creations of world only containing Adam and Eve. In my own opinion I consider this to be purposeful inclination of the director and the script of incorporating an intertextual reference to Adam and Eve.
At one point in the video, there is a merging of Kirsten’s face over the top of Marc’s face, suggesting that she’ll never be easily relieved from his memories. The editing of the two of them together suggests there is a strong bond between them.
There was a shot looking at grass, where in the opening verse he says “My head is off the ground”, making a significant, reference to the lyrics.
This method of imagery is known as montage, when a collection of images are interlinked after one another. I think the use if naturalistic forms reinforces the feeling of freedom, and you are led to believe he is finally restored back into normality.
James Blunt 'You’re Beautiful' presented an relateble concept associated with feeling brutally honest through the feeling of broken heartness, using an element of intrigue and creativity.






Cinematography
What I love about this video is that it matches the slow and subtle nature of the song in the translating it to the cameras gradual movements. like the moment the camera moves above his to the sky we see seagulls circle overhead like buzzards. This camera moved like this on two occasions catching the same masquerade of birds but the camera would slowly come down and capture James Blunt in his next activity or stance.


The main camera shot in the video was close up of James face singing throughout the video eyes towards the camera like a personal interaction with the audience that is incredibly intimate and similar to Marc Fosters music video. Both videos use this shot in a manner that is focused in the emotion conveyed that we truly grasp it in a way that is quite claustrphobic, but very personal. 


Lighting
The enviroment is evidently cold, bare, snowy setting that appears to be naturally lit bright and clear.


Editing
The transition between shots of him are very calm and subtle which i really liked because you werent distracted and not too many things went on the vieod was focused on him and slow angles his environment above him and the objecs set in the ground that the would zoom into them and graudually draw back in the very sam e place. Most of the time the camre was still, like the moment he lept of the cliff the camera remained still  watching him drop into the water below. The effect of this shot makes his action apper real and sudden because you see him grow further and futher away and then the plunge of water left after him falling under. this shot provided authetic perspective of him disappearing into the wide sea.

Mise-en-scene
The Blunt removes the upper portion of his clothing in a cold, bare, snowy setting and places all of his personal belongings on the ground. What is intersting is that the props were his personal items alone among the whole video, which is simple and great way to use a something small to present something deeper and more peronal through lesser complexity of multiple props.

Representation
The video ends with a dramatic plunge to his death his finak words being  "But it's time to face the truth, I will never be with you" is a a calm exaggeration of when we are struggling emotional towards another we often think of the worst and feeling like nothing is worth more in life thann that individual. I think this is the feeling both the artist and the director Sam Brown wanted to portray to people that experience a broken heart.

Form
This is a performance music video, it features James Blunt staring starkly at the camre mouthing the words of the lyrics.

Cultural references and intertextuality
James follows a Japanese tradition of removing one's shoes and contents of clothing prior to jumping from a great height.

Pre-production: Roles and Responsibilities

2) Between our group we delegated the official roles in the making of the video for next year. We may help one another along the way, whether if its is much needed assistanc or honest opinons. the team will be open to heling eachother achieving a successful indie music video. my role is currently the director and cinematography.

Director- Marissa
A director is a person who directs the actors and film crew in filmmaking. The director also plays a key role in post-production, and control a film's artistic and dramatic aspects, while guiding the technical crew and actors.
Directors are responsible for overseeing creative aspects of a film under the overall control of the film producer. They often develop the vision for a film and carry out the vision, deciding how the film should look, in other words they make their vision come to life. They are responsible for turning the script into a sequence of shots. They also direct what tone it should have and what an audience should gain from the cinematic experience.
Videographer- Radhika
A videographer is a person who works in the field of videography, video production, recording moving images and sounds on video tape, disk, and other electro-mechanical device. Videographers work alone with a single-camera setup or in the case of a multiple-camera setup, as part of a larger television crew with lighting technician, grips and sound operators.

Editor/Cinematographer- Radhika/ Marissa

A film or video editor is responsible for assembling raw material into a finished product suitable for broadcasting. This is a key role in the post-production process and the editor's skill can determine the quality and delivery of the final product. The editor can be apart of team and they will usually work closely with the director to achieve the desired end result.
A cinematographer is the chief over the camera and lighting crews working on a film, responsible for achieving artistic and technical decisions related to the image. The cinematographer in in charge of selecting the lens, filters, etc., to realize the scene in accordance with the intentions of the director.
Scriptwriter -Hannah

A scriptwriter is the person who writes, and creates the short films through video.
Prop/costume management- Hannah

Costume manager is the person that oversees the concept film or video and select the clothing for the main actors/actresses/other extras to match the vision of the director.  
Location manager- Mark

Location manager fulfils the vison of the film or video locations, and arrange its availbility.
Casting director-Mark

Casting is a pre-production process for selecting a cast.


Pre-production: Shooting Schedule

1) Our group will be shooting during Wednesday and Fridays, as we are all available at these times, but when we cant all film together we will have a discussion what will tak place on the next shoot if one or two of us are off. so that we contiune to communicate and have personal input in the anything concernig the video.
Monday is when we all edit the music viedo over two mac computars in our school for two hours.

The conventions of genre: Between (Indie music videos) Marcus ‘I was Broken’ and Florence ‘What the water gave me’.

The Convention of Genre

Introduction
At first I looked at the conventions of two indie music videos. One is an emotive music video by Marc Foster, called ‘I Was Broken’.  It was a simple black-and-white video, that primarily featured naturist shots of the open skies, plants, and animal life, with a head shot of just Marc Foster in what appeared to be denim top. I have no previous knowledge of who Marc Foster was, however the attraction to the video was the use of Kirsten Stewart, who is best known for her character as “Bella” in Twilight, the vampire movie. This has captured millions of young viewers and grossed millions of dollars.  I was interested to continue to watch the video as I wanted to see her performance, in what was her first music video.  I am confident I am not alone in doing this and suspect that was the pure reason for using this particular Hollywood star.  The objective would be to engage younger viewers such as myself who would possibly not ordinarily watch or listen.


In addition to my analysis of indie music videos, that I will compare 'I Was Broken' to  'What the water gave me' by Florence and The Machine.

  
Cinematography
As I pointed out in the start the shot used to capture Marcus Foster is a head shot, this was the opening shot at the start of the video a disgruntled Marcus Foster stares into the camera face on. This is used to create a personal contact with audience. The camera shows from his head to his shoulder, however Marcus is leaning back and forth into the camera and the reason I would probably not call it a close-up entirely. I would not consider this to be a close-up the reason is the fact the camera leaves no space above his head and with the movements made, at times we lose his shoulders.
In comparison to way the camera angled to Kirsten is a medium long shot. In those shots would see her look into her empty space lost, alone and almost remorseful. The medium long shot enables you to see her movement from the top of her head down to her waist, in order to see her movement about her space. While at the same time a close-up of her pretty face is an emphasis of emotion of her regret and loss, as an audience take not of the significance behind the shot. The director would have added these shots to medium long shots for more emotional effect.
Lighting
The lighting in this video was varied in where they used natural or artificial lighting. For example the naturist shots captured an element of natural lighting, although it is captured in black and white impeccable and obviously photogenic face, though so blown-out by the lighting that her skin is practically indistinguishable from the background,   this did serve as a nice counterpoint to Marcus Foster's constant squinting and wincing.
The lighting exhibited in Florence and Machine in the video is natural, because there are scenes of Florence outdoor performance has a lot of bright sunshine over her and the band. I feel the lighting matches the excitement and expressive emotion evoked in the emotion in her performance. Unlike the sunshine featured in one of Marcus’s video instead in black and white and is a different feel to the sunlight in Florence’s video. The use of black and white strikes a depressing loss of spirit and joy to his videos use of lighting.
Editing
At one point in the video, there is a merging of Kirsten’s face over the top of Marc’s face, suggesting that she’ll never be easily relieved from his memories. The editing of the two of them together suggests there is a strong bond between them. Does this make it more of a conceptual video?
The images portray a sensuality and calmness, influenced by the style of music being very melodic whereas, most of the time it would fade in and out of the shots of Kirsten and Marc. There was a shot looking at grass, where in the opening verse he says “My head is off the ground”, making a significant, reference to the lyrics.
 I like the gentle use of editing in-between performance shots and imagery, an example of this were the shots of landscapes, flowers, elements of sunlight and natures creatures.

Mise-en-scene
It was a simple black-and-white video, that primarily featured naturist shots of the open skies, plants, and animal life, with a head shot of just Marc Foster in what appeared to be denim top. While Kirsten Stewart wore a white vest which of which we could only see through the use of medium long shots. In the florence and machine video share the same simplicity in the nature of her cloting is very oridnary, one particular outfit in white, which had a nice flow to it while she papraded up and down in the performance sequence. I think the white would reflect the bright balance set in her enviromnet shed by the bright sunlight.

Moreover the props seen in florence and the machine video had been located in a studio, Abbey studio where some of the greatest artists have made music there, this could represent a significant menaing to the artist influences or greatest inspirations. then there were the scenes outdoor in the sun on a stage.Marcus Foster- I Was Broken. Form
Both videos compile the use of performance and conceptual in different ways, such as the emotion behind their individual performances. For example, Marcus is completely distraught and portraying an emotive performance in the lyrics of his song demonstrating an evident broken soul in seen in the execution of his performance. In contrast to a more exuberant and joyful sing and dance expressed by Florence both in and out of the studio. This is evident in the scene of Florence on a platform stage singing into a mic in total domination over the freedom of her body and soul.

Cultural references and intertextuality
Both music videos make powerful references to other inspirations such as the characterisation only involve Marcus and Kirsten demonstrates strong reference to Adam and Eve. I say this because the editing between naturist shots and shots of their environment are empty and shots the only shots of human life is the both and then, which makes a strong similarity to the of the first relationship in the creation of the world is so lonely and centred on the two of them.
A second intertextual reference is the adoption of a van on set to create wind between Kirsten locks, I thought this made for an dramatic effect and familiar use in Indian movies. In my slide show photos I noted the notoriety of wind generated for females in Indian movies, this shows a distinct moment a man recognises a beautiful women that basically takes their breathe away. This is what Marcus portrays Kirsten to be once so beautiful to him, but difficult to let go.
Whereas Florence makes a cultural reference the prestigious Abbey Road Studios sign at the end of the video, this represents an honorary embrace by Florence in the choice of location resonates with her highly. It symbolises the international legends recording bands like The Beatles.
Conclusion
Analysing both music videos was incredbly interesting how the music at times can be the music that motivates the vision of the viedo, but i saw style take center stage in the visual maniuolation to still capture natural emotions such as creativity and joy in Florene and Machine video, while Marc is capturing the disance between his former girlfriend and the saddness if its end all relateble emotions, but the each used special effects to reate intrgue. what the water gave me was in a stlye of a geometric dial that some of the shots were duplicated. I Was Broken would play footage over eachother that would dissolve and fade between the Marc and Kirsten in the video.
I learned that filming is the first important stage of it final product, but the imporatnace of cinematographer its sequence that we watch a music video is as inmprtant as taking the imagery and tranforming it into an original form that can resonate differently to other videos.
