Pre-production: Inspirations

3) I was inspired by the simplicity of the music video by Marcus foster called I was Broken featuring Kirsten Stewart as the female lead. I thought the editing of the music only featured the artist and the actress and moment of moving imagery of nature and townscapes. I felt that the lonely and empty spaces captured the moment similar between the creations of world only containing Adam and Eve. In my own opinion I consider this to be purposeful inclination of the director and the script of incorporating an intertextual reference to Adam and Eve.
At one point in the video, there is a merging of Kirsten’s face over the top of Marc’s face, suggesting that she’ll never be easily relieved from his memories. The editing of the two of them together suggests there is a strong bond between them.
There was a shot looking at grass, where in the opening verse he says “My head is off the ground”, making a significant, reference to the lyrics.
This method of imagery is known as montage, when a collection of images are interlinked after one another. I think the use if naturalistic forms reinforces the feeling of freedom, and you are led to believe he is finally restored back into normality.
James Blunt 'You’re Beautiful' presented an relateble concept associated with feeling brutally honest through the feeling of broken heartness, using an element of intrigue and creativity.

Cinematography
What I love about this video is that it matches the slow and subtle nature of the song in the translating it to the cameras gradual movements. like the moment the camera moves above his to the sky we see seagulls circle overhead like buzzards. This camera moved like this on two occasions catching the same masquerade of birds but the camera would slowly come down and capture James Blunt in his next activity or stance.

The main camera shot in the video was close up of James face singing throughout the video eyes towards the camera like a personal interaction with the audience that is incredibly intimate and similar to Marc Fosters music video. Both videos use this shot in a manner that is focused in the emotion conveyed that we truly grasp it in a way that is quite claustrphobic, but very personal.

Lighting
The enviroment is evidently cold, bare, snowy setting that appears to be naturally lit bright and clear.

Editing
The transition between shots of him are very calm and subtle which i really liked because you werent distracted and not too many things went on the vieod was focused on him and slow angles his environment above him and the objecs set in the ground that the would zoom into them and graudually draw back in the very sam e place. Most of the time the camre was still, like the moment he lept of the cliff the camera remained still  watching him drop into the water below. The effect of this shot makes his action apper real and sudden because you see him grow further and futher away and then the plunge of water left after him falling under. this shot provided authetic perspective of him disappearing into the wide sea.

Mise-en-scene
The Blunt removes the upper portion of his clothing in a cold, bare, snowy setting and places all of his personal belongings on the ground. What is intersting is that the props were his personal items alone among the whole video, which is simple and great way to use a something small to present something deeper and more peronal through lesser complexity of multiple props.

Blunt removes the upper portion of his clothing in a cold, bare, snowy setting and places all of his personal belongings on the ground. While doing this, seagulls circle overhead like buzzards. At the end of the video, he jumps off a cliff and lands into the depths of icy water while he sings the lyrics: "But it's time to face the truth, I will never be with you". The video was filmed in Mallorca, Spain

Representation
The video ends with a dramatic plunge to his death his finak words being  "But it's time to face the truth, I will never be with you" is a a calm exaggeration of when we are struggling emotional towards another we often think of the worst and feeling like nothing is worth more in life thann that individual. I think this is the feeling both the artist and the director Sam Brown wanted to portray to people that experience a broken heart.

Form
This is a performance music video, it features James Blunt staring starkly at the camre mouthing the words of the lyrics.

Cultural references and intertextuality
James follows a Japanese tradition of removing one's shoes and contents of clothing prior to jumping from a great height.

The conventions of genre: Between (Indie music videos) Marcus ‘I was Broken’ and Florence ‘What the water gave me’.

The Convention of Genre

Introduction
At first I looked at the conventions of two indie music videos. One is an emotive music video by Marc Foster, called ‘I Was Broken’.  It was a simple black-and-white video, that primarily featured naturist shots of the open skies, plants, and animal life, with a head shot of just Marc Foster in what appeared to be denim top. I have no previous knowledge of who Marc Foster was, however the attraction to the video was the use of Kirsten Stewart, who is best known for her character as “Bella” in Twilight, the vampire movie. This has captured millions of young viewers and grossed millions of dollars.  I was interested to continue to watch the video as I wanted to see her performance, in what was her first music video.  I am confident I am not alone in doing this and suspect that was the pure reason for using this particular Hollywood star.  The objective would be to engage younger viewers such as myself who would possibly not ordinarily watch or listen.

In addition to my analysis of indie music videos, that I will compare 'I Was Broken' to  'What the water gave me' by Florence and The Machine.

Cinematography
As I pointed out in the start the shot used to capture Marcus Foster is a head shot, this was the opening shot at the start of the video a disgruntled Marcus Foster stares into the camera face on. This is used to create a personal contact with audience. The camera shows from his head to his shoulder, however Marcus is leaning back and forth into the camera and the reason I would probably not call it a close-up entirely. I would not consider this to be a close-up the reason is the fact the camera leaves no space above his head and with the movements made, at times we lose his shoulders.
In comparison to way the camera angled to Kirsten is a medium long shot. In those shots would see her look into her empty space lost, alone and almost remorseful. The medium long shot enables you to see her movement from the top of her head down to her waist, in order to see her movement about her space. While at the same time a close-up of her pretty face is an emphasis of emotion of her regret and loss, as an audience take not of the significance behind the shot. The director would have added these shots to medium long shots for more emotional effect.
Lighting
The lighting in this video was varied in where they used natural or artificial lighting. For example the naturist shots captured an element of natural lighting, although it is captured in black and white impeccable and obviously photogenic face, though so blown-out by the lighting that her skin is practically indistinguishable from the background,   this did serve as a nice counterpoint to Marcus Foster's constant squinting and wincing.
The lighting exhibited in Florence and Machine in the video is natural, because there are scenes of Florence outdoor performance has a lot of bright sunshine over her and the band. I feel the lighting matches the excitement and expressive emotion evoked in the emotion in her performance. Unlike the sunshine featured in one of Marcus’s video instead in black and white and is a different feel to the sunlight in Florence’s video. The use of black and white strikes a depressing loss of spirit and joy to his videos use of lighting.
Editing
At one point in the video, there is a merging of Kirsten’s face over the top of Marc’s face, suggesting that she’ll never be easily relieved from his memories. The editing of the two of them together suggests there is a strong bond between them. Does this make it more of a conceptual video?
The images portray a sensuality and calmness, influenced by the style of music being very melodic whereas, most of the time it would fade in and out of the shots of Kirsten and Marc. There was a shot looking at grass, where in the opening verse he says “My head is off the ground”, making a significant, reference to the lyrics.
I like the gentle use of editing in-between performance shots and imagery, an example of this were the shots of landscapes, flowers, elements of sunlight and natures creatures.
This method of imagery is known as montage, when a collection of images are interlinked after one another. I think the use if naturalistic forms reinforces the feeling of freedom, and you are led to believe he is finally restored back into normality.
Mise-en-scene
It was a simple black-and-white video, that primarily featured naturist shots of the open skies, plants, and animal life, with a head shot of just Marc Foster in what appeared to be denim top. While Kirsten Stewart wore a white vest which of which we could only see through the use of medium long shots. In the florence and machine video share the same simplicity in the nature of her cloting is very oridnary, one particular outfit in white, which had a nice flow to it while she papraded up and down in the performance sequence. I think the white would reflect the bright balance set in her enviromnet shed by the bright sunlight.

Moreover the props seen in florence and the machine video had been located in a studio, Abbey studio where some of the greatest artists have made music there, this could represent a significant menaing to the artist influences or greatest inspirations. then there were the scenes outdoor in the sun on a stage.Marcus Foster- I Was Broken. Conventions of genre.
Form
Both videos compile the use of performance and conceptual in different ways, such as the emotion behind their individual performances. For example, Marcus is completely distraught and portraying an emotive performance in the lyrics of his song demonstrating an evident broken soul in seen in the execution of his performance. In contrast to a more exuberant and joyful sing and dance expressed by Florence both in and out of the studio. This is evident in the scene of Florence on a platform stage singing into a mic in total domination over the freedom of her body and soul.
The second form both indie music video share a conceptual
But Marcus deviates into the third that is the narrative
Cultural references and intertextuality
Both music videos make powerful references to other inspirations such as the characterisation only involve Marcus and Kirsten demonstrates strong reference to Adam and Eve. I say this because the editing between naturist shots and shots of their environment are empty and shots the only shots of human life is the both and then, which makes a strong similarity to the of the first relationship in the creation of the world is so lonely and centred on the two of them.
A second intertextual reference is the adoption of a van on set to create wind between Kirsten locks, I thought this made for an dramatic effect and familiar use in Indian movies. In my slide show photos I noted the notoriety of wind generated for females in Indian movies, this shows a distinct moment a man recognises a beautiful women that basically takes their breathe away. This is what Marcus portrays Kirsten to be once so beautiful to him, but difficult to let go.
Whereas Florence makes a cultural reference the prestigious Abbey Road Studios sign at the end of the video, this represents an honorary embrace by Florence in the choice of location resonates with her highly. It symbolises the international legends recording bands like The Beatles.
Conclusion
Analysing both music videos was incredbly interesting how the music at times can be the music that motivates the vision of the viedo, but i saw style take center stage in the visual maniuolation to still capture natural emotions such as creativity and joy in Florene and Machine video, while Marc is capturing the disance between his former girlfriend and the saddness if its end all relateble emotions, but the each used special effects to reate intrgue. what the water gave me was in a stlye of a geometric dial that some of the shots were duplicated. I Was Broken would play footage over eachother that would dissolve and fade between the Marc and Kirsten in the video.
I learned that filming is the first important stage of it final product, but the imporatnace of cinematographer its sequence that we watch a music video is as inmprtant as taking the imagery and tranforming it into an original form that can resonate differently to other videos.

David Gauntlett’s Media Studies 2.0

The Media Studies 2.0 is an article arguing the relationships between online media, other media. creativity, and everday life in media today. Media Studies looks at the graduation from traditonal approaches into alternate observations in specific events.

The Internet is the dominating media platform today, as it has become an essential tool for research without any restrictions to information is endless.
Many people hugely credit mainstream productions, in addition to the acknowledgement of appearances of niche products. Therefore 'The Long Tail' is continuously growing longer as more people are embracing more advanced developments.
Conventional concerns with power and politics are reworked in recognition of these points, so that the notion of super-powerful media industries invading the minds of a relatively passive population is compelled to recognise and address the context of more widespread creation and participation.
Media Studies 2.0 is far more analytic than passive and informational. Experts seem to have more to say than the audience. An essential factor to excel in the curriculum is to be more intellectually inclined to your own opinions.
The focus on primarily Western media is replaced with an attempt to embrace the truly international dimensions of Media Studies – including recognition not only of the processes of globalization, but also of the diverse perspectives on media and society being worked on around the world.
Media studies 2.0 has not existed without the first outline drawn from Media tudies 1.0. the curriclum looks at the traditonal approach dominating in schools, universtiy teaching and textbok teachings.
One factor is charaterised by traditional media produced by major Western broadcasters, publishers, and movie studios, accompanied (ironically) by a critical resistance to big media institutions, such as Rupert Murdoch's News International, but no particular idea about what the alternatives might be;
other characterisations are;
·         Vague recognition of the internet and new digital media, as an 'add on' to the traditional media (to be dealt with in one self-contained segment tacked on to a Media Studies teaching module, book or degree);
·         A preference for conventional research methods where most people are treated as non-expert audience 'receivers', or, if they are part of the formal media industries, as expert 'producers'.

Sennett's 'Craftsman' theory

What is The Craftsman Theory
The Craftsman is written by Richard Sennett and he is the “…prime observer of society, an American, a pragmatist who takes the nitty gritty of daily life and turns it into a disquisition on morality. His earlier books include The Fall of Public Man, The Conscience of the Eye and The Corrosion of Character. Sennett's knowledge and interests range widely over architecture, art, design, literature and the ever fluctuating social life of cities. The components of the man-made environment enthrall him. He is an enchanting writer with important things to say.”-guardian

Craft work is widely observed in his new book. There is a continuous reference to potters making mugs or Moroccan Leather grainers, I agree such people are involved, but he most resonates with the crafts of making music, cooking, the ‘desire to do things well that (he thinks)’ lives in all of us, the desire to prevail in ones work, has the possibility frustrated and damage once these urges are denied.

Sennett is a professional sociologist-philosopher and also a musician. The Guardian quotes a unique moment in the book, which was an example of “enduring, basic human impulse”. The scene verges on craft mania is a scene in a town’s concert center, and a local orchestra rehearses the string section in pure endurance and desire for perfection in their craftwork, the conductor hardly take notice of their ongoing efforts to satisfy their deeper being. In that scene so rightfully examines the ‘painstaking efforts of improvement of performance’ is a combination of drive and obsession for perfection.

Sennett views the satisfactions of physical making as a necessary part of being human. The slow ‘rhythms’ of grasping a complex and intelligible craft, we need them for enrichment and growth in connection to a craftworks material reality.

The Long Tail

What is the Long Tail?
The Long Tail focuses on how our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of "hits", such as, mainstream products and markets at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niche markets in the tail.  As the costs of production and distribution fall, especially online, there is now less need to lump products and consumers into one-size-fits-all containers. In an era without the constraints of physical shelf space and other bottlenecks of distribution, narrowly-targeted goods and services can be as economically attractive as mainstream fare.
What Long tail isn’t?
There are many distortions of the term, but the most common one is to use it as a newly-positive synonym for "fringe". Invoking the Long Tail is not a magic wand to explain away the apparent lack of demand for what you've got.  The Long Tail is not a get-out-of-jail-free card for poor-selling product. Or weak sectors. Or bad ideas.
What can is it used for?
One example of this is the theory's prediction that demands for products not available in traditional bricks and mortar stores is potentially as big as for those that are. But the same is true for video not available on broadcast TV on any given day, and songs not played on radio. In other words, the potential aggregate size of the many small markets in goods that don't individually sell well enough for traditional retail and broadcast distribution may someday rival that of the existing large market in goods that do cross that economic bar.
The drive to build a market and obtain revenue from the consumer demographic of the long tail has led businesses to implement a series of long-tail marketing techniques, most of them based on extensive use of internet technologies. Among the most representative are Viral marketing: The intentional spreading of marketing messages using pre-existing social networks, with an emphasis on the casual, non-intentional and low cost, commonly through YouTube videos, viral emails and standalone microsites. Including eBay (auctions), Yahoo! and Google (web search), Amazon (retail), and iTunes Store (music and podcasts), amongst the major companies, along with smaller Internet companies like Audible (audio books) and Netflix (video rental).
Why is the Long tail important for the media?
When consumers are offered infinite choice, the true shape of demand is revealed. And it turns out to be less hit-centric than we thought. People gravitate towards niches because they satisfy narrow interests better, and in one aspect of our life or another we all have some narrow interest (whether we think of it that way or not).
What is the effect s of online access?
In his Wired article, Chris Anderson cites earlier research, by Erik Brynjolfsson, Yu (Jeffrey) Hu, and Michael D. Smith, who first used a log-linear curve on an XY graph to describe the relationship between Amazon.com sales and sales ranking. They found that a large proportion of Amazon.com's book sales come from obscure books that were not available in brick-and-mortar stores.
They then quantified the potential value of the Long Tail to consumers. In an article published in 2003, these authors showed that, while most of the discussion about the value of the Internet to consumers has revolved around lower prices, consumer benefit (a.k.a. consumer surplus) from access to increased product variety in online book stores is ten times larger than their benefit from access to lower prices online. Thus, the primary value of the internet to consumers comes from releasing new sources of value by providing access to products in the Long Tail.

World Exclusive - "Google Music expected to launch next month"

The Guardian confirms 'Search giant understood to be close to unveiling its first music service in bid to rival Apple's iTunes'.

Google is understood to be a month away from unveiling its first music service, which will combine an MP3 download store with a cloud storage system set up to allow people to store songs remotely and play them back on multiple devices, according to sources in the music industry.

The search giant has signed up fourth music major EMI and is in serious negotiations with market leader Universal – who together account for a third of all music worldwide. Sony Music and Warner Music, the remaining two majors, are also in talks with Google, although as yet neither are understood to be close to signing up.

Andy Rubin, the head of development for Google subsidiary Android, told a conference in Hong Kong that "I think we're close" to launching Google Music, and added that the service would have "a little twist – it will have a little Google in it. We won't just be selling 99-cent tracks."

He offered no timing for the launch, but sources in the industry indicated they believed Google Music would emerge in November. Universal acts range from Lady Gaga to U2, with the smaller EMI holding the rights to The Beatles and Pink Floyd.

The cloud storage service roughly mirrors Apple's iTunes Match, in that it will scan a computer hard drive for all the music stored on it – whether paid for or pirated – and will make those songs available to be listened to legally from the remote services. Music executives are enthusiastic about the idea because it gives consumers an amnesty for all previous illegal copies or downloads.

However, some of the music majors are keen that Google charges for its matching service, amid concerns that they do not want to see the search engine dramatically undercut its competitor. Apple charges consumers $25 a year cash – the service is only available in beta in the US – which in turn largely goes to the record companies as royalty payments, as a partial indemnity for years of piracy.

Google is aiming to sign up worldwide agreements with the music majors, although music executives believe that the company is most likely to offer Google Music in the US before expanding the offering to other countries, including the UK.

What is we-media?

This is the first I had come across the terminology “We media”, so in order to gain a better understanding; I looked into it more through research. I will proceed to illustrate through my short essay, what I think the meaning behind “We media” is, and its relevance to today’s media consumers.
In a nut shell ‘We media’ looks at how audiences are shaping media platforms such as, Print, Broadcasting, and E-media, in its future of news and information.
In today’s media industry, there is an increasing desire for information in media through the use of technology. Today’s society receives information in three ways.
The first is that people are gullible and will read, listen to, or watch just about anything. The second is that most people require an informed ‘intermediary’ to tell them what is good, important or meaningful. The third, is that people are smart, and will want to figure it out themselves, by finding their ‘own version of the truth’ and come to their own conclusion.
I consider “We Media” as a way to begin to understand how ordinary citizens, empowered by digital technologies, connected through knowledge around the globe, are contributing to, and participating in their own truths; to their own kind of news.
We are free to select our own media topics through the use of blogs, social networks, and other web related forums such as, YouTube.   This is evident as there is active participation of being a media consumer into their own media producers. I think that We Media reveals something about society and the way people learn from each other.
Over the past two centuries we have seen a dark side to We media. It feels like a new era has been thrust upon us, an era of ‘enlightened anxiety’. We now know more than ever before, but our knowledge creates anxiety over harsh truths and puzzling paradoxes.
The fact is, the media has a huge influence on the way we interact, in the way we live, work, shop, play, engage, collaborate and network.  I have learned that We media sheds light on the access to advanced technologies,  presents a powerful vision for the reshaping of media information, and news is conducted and received amongst audiences; for media consumers two centuries ago in comparison to today’s media cultured society.

The History Of Indie Music (continued): Seven Ages of Rock (part 2 and 3)

Seven Ages of Rock is a BBC Two series, co-produced by BBC Worldwide and VH1 Classic in 2007 about the history of rock music.

This is programme 7: What the World Is Waiting For. Part 2.

Indie Music Promotion Pt. 2- "Get Agressive In the Networking"

Get Aggressive In the Networking
Once you feel comfortable online, the next thing that you must do is to not develop a strong network both online and in the non-digital world. Get to know the people who are big names in the industry. Or possible alternative is getting to know the people who KNOW the big names in the industry. Befriend them, flatter them, and get closer to the limelight. If you suddenly find out via your online accounts that you already have a fan base, keep in touch with them. Also, reach out to other musicians, especially those who belong to the same genre as yours, and try to link each other so you both have the chance to increase your publicity. In you can even plan gigs and events with them.

Like offline networking, online networking allows for interaction. However, it’s not simply a matter of an old-world process moving to a new venue. Technology allows for a wider range of networking experiences and exciting new career possibilities. Indeed, professional women in a variety of fields have leveraged the power of online business and social network sites to their advantage.

What are your thoughts on the advantages or the disadvantages of social networks?

The History Of Indie Music

Seven Ages of Rock is a BBC Two series, co-produced by BBC Worldwide and VH1 Classic in 2007 about the history of rock and indie music.

This is programme 7: What the World Is Waiting For. Part 1.

British indie? this is a great episode, but still too mainstream to really understand "indie" music in the 80s. I would have liked for the show to have talked about the labels, and the movements they supported such as goth, shoegaze, mod revival, punk revival, c86, twee, greebo, britpop, etc... to understand indie music in the 80s and 90s. Unfortunately the show did a poor job of it.

But dont let my opinon be the determining factor. Please share your comments on the Seven Ages of Rock.

Indie Music Promotion Pt. 1- "Get Agressive Online"

So you are new out there in the market, you want to get your music become more exposed to a wider network of people but you think you’re far off from the big names in the billboard charts.
Of course no musician started out easy, especially if he has to do a lot of indie music promotion on his own. However, you know that you have to do it so you can call the people’s attention to the kind of music that you want to make famous/ introduce. So with relatively low budget and a limited network, you have to work your way in.
A lot of talent managers say that indie music promotion needs to have double or triple the efforts made by the entities that are already established. But those efforts may be made easier with these easy focus points:
Get Aggressive Online
The internet has worked for a lot of personalities, companies, advocacies and even in multinational political affairs. The internet has become a new hub of information—reliable information—and the nature of its openness pave way for checks and balances to happen.
Aside from that, using the internet also incurs very little costs, as you only have to have a working computer and a reliable internet connection for your networking to finally take off.
First, you can have your own online profile and then build a brand from it. You can do so simply by keeping a working email (with your band’s name) and have an online social networking account which can also double as an online “headquarters” where you can post pictures, updates of your events or gigs, band member profiles, and even lyrics and chords of your newest songs. When you finally get enough funds, try to invest in a fully functional website. Get a domain. When search is easy and convenient, people will appreciate how you catered to their curiosity fast. THEN you bank on a network.
This link presents 15 Great Online Promtion Tips: http://blog.loopmasters.com/tutorials/promote-your-music/15-online-promotion-tips/

I think these kind of methods could really amount to something, as there are great ideas of music promotion since creating your own website and then promoting it is worth a lot! To gain better music promotion it is essential to try all methods that may take our marketing and film department into musical heights.

What Is this Blog about?
